The Peak District, Derbyshire, U.K. (2) Stately homes

During our recent trip to the Peak District, we visited two magnificent stately homes in the region --- Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall.

Chatsworth House has provided the backdrop for several films and TV dramas. These include the 2005 production of Pride and Prejudice, in which Chatsworth House stands in for Pemberly, the estate of Mr. Darcy. There is a belief that Jane Austin did base Pemberly on Chatsworth House. I had enjoyed reading Pride and Prejudice in my schooldays, and then again years later on a Kindle. After we returned home from our trip, we actually watched the 2005 film on DVD, mostly for the fun of seeing again the beautiful place that we had just visited.

I was most impressed by the excellent condition of the estate, as well as the enormous size of the grounds. The huge collection of arts contained in the house is also amazing. Not only are there paintings, portraits and sculptures, there is also a sizable collection of minerals and precious metals. Walking through the house, from one stateroom to another, gave a similar feeling as touring a palace.

The Stables, which now contain restaurants and shops.

The library --- the most beautiful room of the house in my opinion.

Haddon Hall has even a longer history than Chatsworth House, with its origins dating back to the 12th century. The opening time at noon may not be the most convenient for some visitors. For us, it meant we had an extra leisurely morning. But we were glad there was a free guided tour of the house starting right after the house opened. It was very nice to hear about the many stories of the house with its rich history and it made the visit all the more interesting.
